Bicchu Kokubunji Temple / The Short Summary Of Bicchu Kokubun-ji

Kibiji District is lent by colors by many historical assets and scenery of the nature. Bicchu Kokubunji Temple is one of the historical assets gives visitors exciting impression on the the district.

Bicchu Kokubunji Temple was bulit in 8th century by The Emperor Shomu in Nara period. The emperor wanted people and country to protect from enemies, disasters, diseases with the mercy of Buddha, so he ordered building the Kokubunji Temple throughout Japan in 741. The emperor ruled a requirement that the kokubunji temple would build near capitals of provinces and keeping certain distance from urban area, store 10 copies of both 'Konkomyo Saisho Ookyo' (Golden Light of the Most Victorious Kings Sutra) and 'Hokekyo' (Lotus Sutra), have a Seven Stories Pagoda and keep the framed letters of the Emperor Shomu that write Konkomyo Saisho Ookyo'. Now Bicchu Kokubunji Temple has many buildings, but the Seven-Story Pagoda was lost in the Period of Northern and Southern Dynasties 1136-1392. According to records of the temple, in late Sengoku Period (the Warring States Period), Muneharu Shimizu, famous for the loser of the Inundating Tactics Of The Bicchu Takamatsujo Castle by Hideyoshi Toyotomi in 1582, tried to reconstruct the temple. Then in the late Edo period, the Five-Story pagoda was rebuilt in 1821. It is a very important building remaining the architectural style in Edo period. The Five Story Pagoda standing in the farm land especially put fantastic color in Kibiji. It is the important cultural property designated by the National Gevernment.

Now Bicchu Kokubunji Temple has expressed the Tenpyo culture in Nara period over 1000 years.
